Enschede
Enschede originated in the early Middle Ages as an agricultural settlement around a small castle or borg. The surrounding area was deserted, but the town was located along a trade route, so the village developed steadily and received city rights in 1325. Enschede has had 3 major city fires.
In the 18th century, Enschede’s economy began to change with the strong rise of the Textile Industry. Partly because of this, Enschede became a commercial city. In the 20th century, the textile industry went down completely.
One of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Enschede is Het Elderinkshuis from 1783. Enschede also boasts many churches, including the impressive Grote Kerk, partly dating back to 1200. These sights alone make a visit to Enschede well worth it!
