Harlingen
Harlingen was granted city rights in the year 1234. The city used to fight a lot against the water, but was also dependent on it as evidenced by its extensive commercial and fishing trade. It was also a Hanseatic city. Today, the city has a population of over 15,000.
The history of merchant shipping can still be admired in the many warehouses that served as storage for goods. These include the former ‘Java’ warehouse dating back to the 17th century. Moreover, Harlingen has an ‘old’ town hall, built in 1730, which still looks beautiful today! Another notable building is the former post office from 1896. These sights alone make Harlingen a city well worth visiting!
