Schiedam
South Holland’s Schiedam was originally located on the river Schie from which its name is also derived.
The city has almost 80,000 inhabitants and is famous for its gin production, its historic city centre and the tallest windmills in the world.
Schiedam originated on the dam at the Schie around 1230 and as early as 1275, Schiedam was granted city rights. In the 18th century, Schiedam became the centre for jenever distilling and jenever was exported all over the world from Schiedam. Today, only the preserved jenever mills and the Jenever Museum bear witness to this golden period.
Apart from the mills, the pocket bearer’s house and the old town hall are important sights of Schiedam.
