When Edam started building a new port in 1357, a dam was built around the old port. The old harbour was closed with soil. When the filled harbour was inhabited by farmers and fishermen, the newly created village was called “Follendam”. Volendam is a major tourist attraction, although the village itself has only 23,000 inhabitants.
The well-known palingsound of bands like the Cats and BZN originated here, as well as Jan Smit and Nick and Simon. Important sights include the Palingsound Museum, the diamond-cutting factory and the Volendam Museum.
Frau Antje, the girl who promotes cheese in Germany wears Volendam costumes. Volendam is a special village to visit.
