Munich is the capital of the German state of Bavaria, where it is the largest city with more than 1.4 million inhabitants, the 3rd largest in Germany by population after Berlin and Hamburg.
The city has a rich history, appearing as early as 1158 in a document. Munich is home to numerous national and international government institutions, as well as many large companies, such as BMW, Siemens and Allianz. In 2018, Munich ranked 3rd out of 231 major cities worldwide in terms of quality of life. In addition, Munich is one of the safest major cities in Germany when comparing crime rates.
Munich has many important sights to see, including the new city hall on Marienplatz, Nymphenburg Palace, the Frauenkirche and, of course, Oktoberfest.
