Amersfoort
The first mention of the city of Amersfoort dates from 1028. The city has more than 157,000 inhabitants.
Amersfoort is known for being a growth city and fulfilling an economic regional function with a strongly growing business community. It also has one of the largest railway junctions in the Netherlands, making it easily accessible.
The inner city of Amersfoort is beautiful and still has a medieval character with beautiful canals. The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (‘Lange Jan’) is the city’s main landmark at 98 metres. It is the third highest church tower in the Netherlands! In addition, the city also boasts the magnificent Koppelpoort. These two highlights alone make a visit to Amersfoort worthwhile!
Amersfoort is also sometimes called the Keistad. This name actually originated from a joke/wager that happened in the pub! The Kei stands on a pedestal in the centre for you to admire.
