Assen
Assen came into being when a group of nuns settled here in 1259. In the following centuries, the village and later the city of Assen slowly developed around this administrative centre. The city only received city rights in 1809.
After the year 1900, the development of Assen accelerated. Employment grew before the Second World War and the number of inhabitants increased. After 1945 this number doubled and a number of large residential areas were built. Currently Assen has over 68,000 inhabitants. Assen is especially known for the famous motor race Asser TT!
Assen is a beautiful city with many attractions, including the Drents Archives or the Church of the Assumption. Assen also contains beautiful green areas, such as the Assersbos. This is one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands. Assen is definitely worth a visit!
