Bergen op Zoom originated on a sand ridge. For a long time, the city was a strategic defence point against the Earldom of Zeeland and the Earldom of Holland. Between 1198 and 1212, they received city rights. The city has grown to a population of over 67,000.

Bergen op Zoom is now a beautiful city with an authentic centre. This can be seen, for example, in the Gevangenpoort, which is the only preserved medieval city gate in the city. On the Grote Markt square, you’ll also find beautiful historic buildings, including the old city hall. All this makes Bergen op Zoom definitely worth a visit!
