Coevorden
The first mention of the place name Coevorden comes from the year 1036, in the name of Fredericus of Coevorden. Coevorden now has nearly 36,000 inhabitants.
Coevorden used to be one of the country’s most important fortified towns. Its strategic location made it a prosperous fortified town. In 1407, Coevorden received confirmation of its old city rights from the bishop of Utrecht.
Coevorden’s city centre boasts beautiful historic buildings, including the beautiful Arsenal, built around 1600 for storing weapons and merchandise. Coevorden Castle, which dates back to the year 1025, can still be admired today. The castle is so beautiful that a replica was built in Vancouver in 1986! All this makes Coevorden worth a visit!
