Den Burg
Den Burg is a beautiful village located on the island of Texel with around 6,500 inhabitants.
The origins of Den Burg date back to at least the year 600. Excavations show that a Frisian fortress once stood there.
Den Burg suffered greatly during the Second World War. Indeed, on the night of 5-6 April ’45, Georgian prisoners of war rebelled against their German superiors, leaving many wounded and the town damaged by bombardment. Most of the buildings were restored after the war, leaving a lot of historical beauty to admire! Iconic is the church De Burght. Also special is ‘t Schoutenhuys, which is Texel’s oldest stone building. The cellars used to serve as a prison. This rich history makes Den Burg definitely worth a visit!
