Dokkum enjoys international fame because missionary Boniface was murdered in the area in the year 754. This is also considered the founding year of Dokkum. In 1928, the town was granted city rights. And currently, the town has grown to a population of 12,500.
Dokkum is best known for its crucial role in the famous Frisian eleven city tour! Dokkum is the last town visited with the turning point on the Kleindiep, which acts as a kind of Arena where the skaters enter.
Dokkum has hardly changed in terms of streets since 1649, giving it a historic city centre. It contains many historical buildings, such as the old town hall originating from the 15th century. Dokkum also boasts ‘The Abbey’, a former orphanage originating from 1610. All this makes Dokkum a town worth visiting!
