citygames Edam

Edam

Edam was originally called Yedam. Edam was first mentioned in 1310. In the year 1357, they received city rights from Count Willem V of Holland. Edam currently has over 7,000 inhabitants.
During the Golden Age, the city experienced a great boom. Edam had an important sea trade via the Texel Hole, including to the Dutch East Indies. In addition, there was a lot of trade in cheese. Edam is also known for its Edam cheese! The decline started when it was necessary to build locks, which meant they were no longer on the open sea.
The city centre still shows the beautiful history of the Golden Age and later. This can be seen, for instance, in The Old Council House or the Merchant’s House dating back to 1550! Another eye-catcher is The Great Church with its 32 stained-glass windows. All this certainly makes Edam a city worth visiting!
