citygames Franeker

Franeker

Franeker originated in 734, when Charlemagne had a castellum (fortress) built and named it Franeker. Franeker was granted city rights in 1374 and has since grown into a city with a population of almost 13,000.
Franeker was the most important city of northern Westergo in the Middle Ages. As a result, many noblemen founded their manors and states in Franeker. You can see this for example at the Klein Botnia building and the Dekema House.
Franeker is also known for founding the country’s second university in 1585! The university has disappeared, but it has clearly left its mark in some impressive buildings. You can see this for example in De Bog Fan Guné, the oldest student pub in the Netherlands. All this definitely makes Franeker a city worth visiting!
