Ghent

Ghent has 260,000 inhabitants and originated from a number of Celtic villages that were later merged. The name Ghent comes from the Celtic word ‘Ganda’ meaning estuary. Around the year 1550, Ghent was actually the largest city in Europe after London and Paris.
The city is also called Flower City because of the many flower and plant nurseries found around the city. The Graslei with its historic buildings, St Baaf’s Cathedral, Het Gravenstaan and the Belfry make Ghent well worth a visit.
