Gorinchem was founded around the year 1000 on a raised stretch of long at the mouth of the Linge and Merwede rivers. From the year 1273, the city became a real fortified town, something that can still be seen in today’s street pattern. Gorinchem is the largest fortress still completely intact in the Netherlands. In 1382, Gorinchem received city rights and grew into a city with a current population of 37,000.
The rich history of Gorinchem can be seen, for instance, in De Dalempoort, the only remaining city gate built in 1597. The old city hall that now houses the Gorcums Museum is also admirable! Moreover, Gorinchem contains The Great Tower, also called the St John’s Tower with an impressive height of 65 metres. All this certainly makes Gorinchem a city worth visiting!
