citygames Gouda

Gouda

Gouda is located in the Green Heart of the Netherlands. It originated in the 11th century at the mouth of the beautiful rivers Gouwe and Hollandse Ijssel. This mouth was expanded into a harbour and eventually Gouda was granted city rights by Count Floris V of Holland in 1272.
In the Middle Ages, it was an important centre of trade and industry. Gouda is best known for its Gouda Cheese, which is now distributed not regionally, but internationally. Gouda is also known as the Gouda Cheese City!
The rich history of cheese, among other things, is reflected in various sights, such as the Waaggebouw from 1668. Another eye-catcher is the 123-metre-long Sint-Janskerk; the longest church building in the Netherlands! All this certainly makes Gouda a city worth visiting!
