Groningen

Groningen was originally built on a spur of the Hondsrug. Groningen was first mentioned in 1040. In the 14th century, Groningen was granted city rights and became a Hanseatic city. Groningen has grown considerably and currently has a population of over 200,000.
Groningen is known for being a dynamic city with a mix of modern and historical architecture. A cosy student city with canals, harbours, the beautiful Noorderplantsoen and many nice backstreets.
A real eye-catcher is the Martinitoren with its 96.8 metres height, also called the old grey one. The Prinsentuin, a renaissance garden in Groningen city centre, also contains beautiful sights, such as the De Zonnewijzer building. The city also boasts an old court building dating from 1749 with a beautiful stepped gable. All this certainly makes Groningen a city worth visiting!
