Leeuwarden
Although people have lived there since Roman times, the town came into existence when the mound villages of Oldehove, Hoek and Nijehove merged to form one town. The new town of Leeuwarden received its city rights in 1435. The town was fortified with a moat and a city wall , traces that are also visible in today’s Leeuwarden.
The Leeuwarden of today has a beautiful historic centre where the New Town and the Stadhouderlijk Hof form the centre. The royal family also has roots in Leeuwarden.
Important sights are the Oldehove, the Stadhouderlijk Hof and the Achmeatoren (the highest tower in the north and east of the Netherlands). In short, a city that surprises and is very hospitable.
