Leiden
Leiden is a lively student city with pleasant waterside terraces, many green parks, windmills, and beautiful historical buildings. Even the greatest Dutch painter Rembrandt was born in Leiden. The city has been a rich city since the Middle Ages because of its cloth industry and was then one of the largest cities in the Northern Netherlands. The oldest university in the Netherlands is also in Leiden.
The name Leiden is first mentioned in the year 777, but today Leiden is also called the City of Keys. Every year, Leiden also celebrates the Leids Ontzet (Liberation of Leiden), which commemorates the battle won against Spanish rule.
Leiden has 1250 national monuments such as the Burcht, the City Hall, the Old Observatory and the Morspoort. In short, a beautiful city to visit.
