Marken is first mentioned in writings in the 13th century. Until 1957, Marken was an island in the former Zuiderzee. With the construction of a dike, Marken is now connected to the mainland. The village has managed to retain its authentic atmosphere with its special houses built on stilts and traditional costumes.
Marken has many national monuments and is visited by many tourists every year.
