Mechelen
Mechelen is located in the province of Antwerp on the river Dijle and has almost 86,000 inhabitants. In the 16th century, the Netherlands were governed from Mechelen.
The city is rich in beautiful historical buildings and a canal cruise is also highly recommended. Important sights include the Brussels Gate, the statue of Margaret of Austria and, of course, the Grote Markt with the Sint Romboutstoren.
Nevertheless, Mechelen has managed to retain its unique character and is a special city to visit.
