Medemblik
The name Medemblik is probably derived from the peat river Medemelake that ran here around the year 985. Medemblik is the oldest town in West Friesland and was granted city rights by Count Floris the fifth as early as 1289. He also had Radboud castle built to repel attacks from the Frisians and suppress the West Frisians.
Other important sights in Medemblik are the Sint Martinuskerk, De Waas on the Kaasmarkt and Station Medemblik where the steam tram that runs between Hoorn and Medemblik has its terminus.
Medemblik is a versatile town with its beautiful Emma Park and imposing harbour, which make it well worth a visit.
