citygames Nijmegen

Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands and was already inhabited in AD 5. In Roman times, the city was part of the border of the Roman and Germanic empires.
From the Middle Ages, Nijmegen became a larger city and received its city rights in 1230. The city was the first city to fall into German hands in World War II and there was also heavy fighting to take control of the Waal Bridge in 1944.
Besides the Waalbrug, important sights are the Sint Stevenskerk, the Town Hall and the Waag building. Today’s Nijmegen is a lively student city with plenty of catering facilities.
