Rotterdam

With almost 600,000 inhabitants, Rotterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. The city lies on the Nieuwe Maas river and its name is derived from the river Rotte.
The port was once the largest in the world and today is still the largest in Europe. The bombing in 1940 almost completely destroyed the old city centre but gave way to modern architecture after the war, of which the cube houses, the Market Hall, the Erasmus Bridge and the Euromast are important standard-bearers. But Rotterdam is also a cosy student city with its Old Harbour and many grand cafés.
In short, a metropolis in the Netherlands that is well worth a visit.
