Sneek is the third largest city in the province of Friesland with 34,000 inhabitants. The city lies on the Sneekermeer, a well-known water sports lake, and has a historic city centre including the Waterpoort. The city itself was briefly the capital of the province of Friesland.
The city was founded in the 10th century on a tongue of land which is called “Snake” in Frisian and from which the name Sneek is derived. As a trading town, Sneek had its greatest heyday between 1450 and 1550.

Sneek is part of the Elfstedentocht and today is a popular city among sailors and other water sports enthusiasts. Sneek Week also attracts many water sports enthusiasts. Sneek is a city you must have seen.
