The Hague
The Hague has a long history and is first mentioned in a source in 1242 as ‘Die Haghe’. The Hague only started to grow when Count Willem II had a castle with Binnenhof built in 1248. Around the Binnenhof of this castle, the village of The Hague later developed, which was not granted city rights by Louis Napoleon until 1806.
The Hague is a city with many faces; it contains a bustling city centre, but is also close to the sea. This makes it an international tourist resort.
Iconic for The Hague is the magnificent Binnenhof, whose existence dates back to the 13th century. The Ridderzaal is one of the most famous halls in the Binnenhof and the oldest! Also beautiful to see is Noordeinde Palace. The working palace of King Willem-Alexander. This alone makes The Hague worth a visit!
