Winterswijk
Winterswijk is located in the Achterhoek in Gelderland and has a population of 24,000. The name comes from Germanic and means “daughter settlement of Winidahari”. The name Winterswijk is first described in the 11th century. Winterswijk also used to be surrounded by moats.
From the 17th century, Winterswijk became an important town in the textile industry. From 1932, the town also became known for the limestone mined in the nearby quarry.
Another special feature is the monument commemorating the Netherlands’ neutrality in the 1st World War. In short, Winterswijk breathes a rich past.
